Nobody Played It Safe: Lessons in Creative Differentiation

Some of the most memorable improv shows I’ve ever seen had one thing in common. Nobody played it safe.

I remember a scene that took place entirely inside someone’s liver. No setup. No explanation. Just two performers fully committed to being enzymes with opinions. It was weird. It was hilarious. It worked.

Another time, a friend walked on stage and played the ghost of a praying mantis. I once played an ice cream cone. Full identity. Deep emotional life. Mild fear of summer.

These choices work because they break the pattern. The audience leans in because they didn’t see it coming.

Even small choices matter. Two people cleaning a house is fine. One of them deciding to burn it down instead of vacuuming is memorable.

Here’s why this matters outside of improv. Most businesses are playing the same scene. In fact, about 70% of B2B buyers say they can’t meaningfully tell the difference between brands they’re considering. That’s not a marketing problem. That’s a sameness problem.

Safe language. Safe ideas. Safe presentations. All of it blends together.

Standing out is not about being louder. It’s about making a choice that breaks the pattern in a way that still makes sense. That might look like running a short exercise instead of another slide. Asking a question no one expects in a sales call. Opening a meeting in a way that feels slightly different than usual.

Not random. Intentional.

Improv teaches this fast. A safe choice gets a polite nod. A specific, unexpected choice gets a reaction. And reactions are what people remember.

So before your next presentation, pitch, or meeting, ask yourself: what’s the choice everyone else would make here? Then don’t make it.
